Whitby Goth Weekend April 2013

It has been such a long time since I posted anything to the blog. Life has taken different turns so the photography has taken a bit of a back seat. Over the next month I am planning more photos that I have not had chance to blog about.

So here is my 1st blog of the year. And nearly a year since I last blogged. Spent the weekend up at Whitby and photographed some of the goths and surround landscape. The weather was better than this time last year. Was nice to see a few family faces.

I will be posting a few more shots on face book. Will put the link on when I get them uploaded.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue Lifeboat

Spent the morning  at Hornsea with local photographer Gavin Prest. He had organised a publicity photo-shoot for Hornsea Inshore Rescue. They are a rescue team based at Hornsea’s south beach. They are an independent rescue service crewed by volunteers and funded by charitable donations. There website is here: http://www.hornsearescue.org.uk/index.html

More photos from the day are on my Facebook page.

Withernsea In Winter

Had a ride out to Withernsea to pick my daughter from school. Due to module I have completed at university this is the 1st time I have taken my camera out for the 1st time this year. It was just starting to freeze when I got there. So did not hang around to long.

All shot with Canon 5d Mk2, with 24-70mm 2.8L. Post processing Photomatix, 3exposures and edited with Lightroom 3.

Natasha In The Park

Had the pleasure of working with Natasha a local model and cos-player. The brief was simple, an outside shoot with Natasha wearing a kimono, and capture the colour of Autumn before the season change.

Over the week prior to the shoot the weather had been grey/ overcast and very drab. Luckily we managed to get a little bit sunlight and get some interesting shadows across Natasha’s face.

The shoot was going well until we moved over to the boating lake to get some shots with a reflection. Then two model boat owners launched in the lake directly in the reflection. We quickly moved as we could with Natasha wearing Japanese wooden shoes.

Thanks to Natasha for a fun and educational shoot. Looking forward to working with her again in the future.

Camera: Canon 5d Mark2

Lens: 70-200mm F4l

Behind the scenes with Jess and Hayley

Some shoots from yesterdays post.

It was different to see Hayley as the model and Jess as the makeup artist.

Hayley had the idea of Marilyn Monroe style shoot with blowing dress. Also Jess is very helpful on location redoing makeup and holding reflectors.

50’s Style shoot with Jess and Hayley

Had the opportunity to work with Jess Burwell and Hayley Young. They wanted to work with me on a 50’s style makeup shoot. Last time I had a shoot with them, Jess modelled and Hayley did the special effects makeup. This time Jess is now a qualified makeup artist, and Hayley the willing model. Here are some shots from last time I work with Jess and Hayley

The theme was a 50’s style shoot with simple and subtle make up. A portable studio was set up with a popup white/black ground and two flashes to give a butterfly light technique. We then moved on to Hessle train station, I had shot here before for a vintage theme. At the station there is an old iron bridge that has a vintage feel. We then moved to Hessle foreshore, and shoot along the beach under the Humber Bridge. All the outside shots are with available and the use of a silver reflector, expertly held by Jess.

We were very lucky with the weather as it was the 1st of November. Managed to pick a day when the sun decided to put in an appearance. The shots taken on the banks of the Humber are all about an hour before sunset, this has given the shots a fantastic golden cast.

Equipment:

Camera: Canon 5d Mark2

Lens: 70-200mm F4L

Strobist: 24inch softbox with canon 430exii ¼ power. Reflective silver umbrella with Jessop’s flash set to ¼ power for fill.

Whitby Goth Festival 2011

Went to my 1st Goth Festival at Whitby. Travelled up on the Sunday as rewarded with a sunny but cold day. There was plenty of Festival attendees. They had come dressed as Gothic Victorians, steam punks, Dracula, pirates and the occasional cross dresser.

Went up to St Marys church near the Abbey, I have never seen so many photographers in a church yard in my life.

Here are a selection of  images from the day. More can be found on my Facebook Photography page, or click the image to go to my Flickr site.

Thank you to everyone that attended and was patient with me and all the other photographers.

Autumn Rainbow

rainbow autumn

I remember as a kid been taught the the colours of the rainbow with this rhyme, Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain. Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Indigo-Violet.

Over the last few weeks I have been noticing changes various changes happening outside. Darker mornings, nights drawing in, getting colder and damper. But this year has been spectacular. I blog that I read set a challenge to photograph autumn. So I thought I would capture as many colours as possible. So I had the idea to shoot an autumn rainbow.
